Metal’s Resistance to High-Wind Events

Picture
Metal Roofs are known for their durability, with warranties for 30 years and usability life of 50+ years.  But how do they perform in high wind storms like tropical storms or even hurricanes?

Metal roofs are designed for 120+ mph winds, with additional securing methods they can withstand winds in excess of 160 mph.  To put that into perspective, 120+ mph is like being hit with a Category 3 hurricane, and additional securing methods can go to Category 5 hurricane.  Compare that to asphalt shingles which are rate for 60-80 mph, a Category 1 Hurricane.  No wonder metal roofs are the preferred roofing in Hurricane and high wind areas of the United States.

To get the full benefit of the metal roofing you will want your contractor or installer to use the securing brackets and screws at the recommended intervals for your roof.  Going cheap on screws or brackets is one way to shorten the life and durability of your roof during high wind incidents.

Metal's Resistance to Sun, Rain, and Fire

Metal Roofs have a long history in Hawaii for a good reason, they last in our weather.  Our metal roofs are painted and coated with industry-leading ULTRA-Cool® heat reflective Kynar 500®coating, creating an energy efficient “Cool” metal roof, ideal for Hawaii’s environment.  The ULTRA-Cool® Kynar 500® paint system uses infrared reflective pigments that direct heat away from the roof, lowering the roof’s temperature, keeping the building cooler and reducing cooling costs.

This paint and coating helps protect the metal to last a long life in rainy conditions.  Corrosion occurs as water interacts with materials.  Slowing down this process helps maintain structural integrity and longevity.  No wonder metal roofs with Kynar coatings have become the industry standard and premium choice in Hawaii.  An additional benefit, metal roofs are fire resistant!  So protecting against natural fires and neighbor fires adds another level of protection for your home.

Fortunately you've come to the right place, Island Metals provides high quality metal that is coated in Kynar paint system to provide the highest protection from high-wind events, sun, rain, and fire.  Check out our selection and give us a call to see how we can provide the very best materials to last a long time in Kauai.

It really helped when you said metal roofs have great durability characteristics. My wife and I want to build our dream house, and right now, we're researching what type of roof would be the best for us. We've heard that a metal roof could be a good option, but after reading your piece, we think it'll be a great addition to our house for its weather-resistant qualities. We're thankful for your information about how metal roofs are built to endure extreme weather conditions.

All in all, the decision that you make as a homeowner regarding your ideal roofing materials will involve weighing out the pros and cons of each. However, you really can’t go wrong with the metal roofing option when you reside in a location that is at high risk for disaster.

My aunt wants to upgrade her roofing system so that it can withstand various weather elements. I like your idea of trying out metal roofing because some metals resist corrosion and withstand damage. Perhaps looking for a roofing expert that could install this for her is a great idea.

Metal roofs are more expensive than asphalt roofs, but they are also more robust and wind resistant. Metal roofs can be made out of a range of different materials. Aluminum, copper, steel, and zinc alloy are among them. It's a good idea to consult an experienced roofing specialist before making any decisions about which metal roofing material to employ for your home. Steel roofs can be painted or zinc coated, depending on your preference.

Metal roofs can last more than 30 years with only minimal maintenance, whereas asphalt shingles will need constant upkeep and repairs. The material is so strong, even with those high speed winds.

Steel roofing material is that they are great for the environment, don't pollute as well as other materials do. Metal roofs, at the end of their life, are actually 100% recyclable.

Clearing the snow off your roof from the gutters or eaves upwards of three to four feet after each winter storm can help prevent ice dams from forming. Remember to avoid using a ladder in snowy and icy conditions. This can be extremely dangerous.

Metal roofing has often been called the “Cadillac of Roofing.” Depending on your opinion of that particular manufacturer, this comparison could be less than flattering.

The reasoning behind these savings is that the metal actually reflects the UV rays from the sun as they hit your roof.

Designing a standing seam metal roof according to the weather events it will experience helps to ensure the roof doesn’t prematurely degrade or fail due to the environment. Plus, it protects the often significant investment of the property owner and/or client you’re working with.

Overall, metal roofs stand up to extreme winter weather really well. Metal is very durable and can better withstand winter elements than shingle roofs.. Even when the winter winds start blowing strongly, metal roofs can withstand wind gusts up to 140 mph.

I love how you point out that metal roofs are designed to hold up to extreme weather. My cousins have been talking about wanting to replace their roof because of the weather they've been experiencing. We've been looking into metal roofing and it's benefits to see if that is something they'd want to switch to.

Thanks so much for talking about how that added layer to finished roofing prevents corrosion and helps it last longer. I have a cousin who's wanting to replace her roof and she's been thinking of trying out metal. We'll have to look into finding some contractors she can talk with and can help her get the new roof installed.
